Showing up in nearby towns when your office is somewhere else

Your shop is in Bukit Baru, but customers in Alor Gajah, Jasin or Masjid Tanah never see you on the map — or you are in Jasin, and Melaka city never sees you. Why a Business Profile only reaches so far, how to check where you really show up, how to set the service area honestly, what actually stretches your reach — and the address shortcuts that get Malaysian profiles suspended.

The short answer

Your address decides how far the map reaches — the service area list does not lift ranking.

Reviews, real photos and local mentions from a town tie you to it; a town page wins the normal results.

No friend’s house, virtual office or town names in the business name — a real branch is the only honest way to own another town’s map.

01

Why your map reach stops at the next town

Google ranks the map from where the customer is standing. Your address decides how far that reaches — not the list of towns you type in.

01

Distance is measured from your pin

A profile with a shop in Bukit Baru starts strong around Melaka city and Ayer Keroh and gets weaker every kilometre after. By Masjid Tanah or Merlimau, closer businesses usually win.

02

The service area list is not a ranking switch

Adding Jasin to your service areas tells customers you go there. It does not, on its own, move you up the map in Jasin.

03

Fewer rivals, longer reach

In a smaller town with two aircond shops, a well-kept profile from Melaka city can still appear. In a busy category in Ayer Keroh, it rarely will.

04

The normal results have no distance limit

Below the map, a good page can rank in any town. That is where most businesses without a local address win their first enquiries.

02

Check where you really show up

Searching from your own shop tells you nothing — you are standing where you are strongest. Look from the customer’s side.

01

Ask someone in that town

A customer, supplier or relative in Alor Gajah or Jasin searches your main service on their phone and sends a screenshot. Five minutes, and the most honest test there is.

02

Search with the town name

Search “aircond service Jasin” in a private browser window. It is not the same as standing in Jasin, but it shows who Google links to that town.

03

Business Profile performance

The “Searches” list shows the words people used to find you. If no town names from outside your area appear, you are not reaching there yet.

04

Search Console, by town

Filter queries by each town name. Impressions with few clicks mean you are close; no impressions mean Google does not connect you with that town at all.

03

Set the service area honestly

The setting does not lift ranking, but a wrong one confuses customers and can trigger a review.

01

Only towns you will actually drive to

If you would turn down a job in Muar, do not list Muar. A customer who is refused leaves the kind of review that hurts everywhere.

02

Towns and districts, not the whole country

List places like Alor Gajah, Jasin, Ayer Keroh and Melaka Tengah. “Malaysia” as a service area looks careless and helps no one.

03

Shop plus service area is allowed

If customers visit your shop and you also go to them, keep the address shown and add the towns you cover. Only hide the address if customers never come.

04

Say the same on your website

The towns on the profile, the towns on your site and the towns in your WhatsApp replies should be the same list.

04

What actually stretches your reach

Prominence travels further than distance. These are the signals that tie your business to a town where you have no address.

01

Reviews from customers in that town

When a customer in Jasin is happy, ask for a review the same day. Many will mention the town by themselves — never write it for them or ask them to add it.

02

Photos of real jobs there

A finished job in Taman Merdeka Permai, a delivery to Masjid Tanah. Customers recognise the place. Geotagging photos does not help — Google removes the location data.

03

Mentions in that town

Town Facebook groups, the local persatuan, a kedai or supplier there that lists you as their go-to. Real local mentions are what a profile far away is missing.

04

A real page for that town

One page per town you want, with jobs and travel time from there. The Local SEO guide explains how to write it — that page is what wins the normal results.

05

Shortcuts that get profiles suspended

Most Melaka businesses that “appear everywhere” overnight are using one of these. They work for a few weeks.

01

A friend’s house as a second address

A profile at a relative’s house in Alor Gajah, with no signboard and no staff, is exactly what Google’s checks look for.

02

A virtual office in each town

Not allowed unless staff are actually there during opening hours. Suspension often takes the main profile down with it.

03

Town names in the business name

“Ali Aircond Melaka Jasin Alor Gajah” breaks the naming rule and is easy for a competitor to report.

04

Several profiles for one business

One business, one location, one profile. Extra profiles split the reviews and put all of them at risk. If it has already happened, the suspension guide shows how to recover.

06

When a second location makes sense

If one town brings enough work, a real branch is the only way to own its map. Check the numbers first.

01

What counts as a real location

Premises with your signboard, staff during opening hours and its own council licence — from MPAG in Alor Gajah or MPJ in Jasin, for example.

02

Count the work before you rent

If Jasin already brings a few jobs a month from the normal results and WhatsApp, a small branch there may pay. If it brings none, a branch will not fix that alone.

03

One profile per branch

Each real branch gets its own profile, own photos and ideally its own phone line. Do not move the main profile’s address to the new place.

04

Ads for the gap in between

Google Ads can target a radius around a town while the free reach grows. They do not lift your map ranking, but they bring enquiries the same week.

FAQAsked often

Quick answers.

01Does adding more towns to my service area help me rank there?

No. It tells customers where you go, and Google uses it to show where you work, but it does not move you up the map by itself. Reviews, mentions and a page for that town do more.

02Can I list towns outside Melaka, like Muar or Tampin?

Yes, if you really serve them. Ranking there is harder because of distance, so start with a page for that town and ask customers there for reviews.

03I’m based in Jasin. Can I get customers in Melaka city?

Yes, but the city map is the hardest place to do it — far more competitors sit close to the customer. Win the normal results with a page for your service in Melaka city, ask city customers for reviews, and use Ads while that grows. A branch in the city only makes sense once the work is already coming.

04A competitor shows up in every town. How?

Usually a real branch, very few rivals in those towns — or fake addresses. If a listing has no real premises, use “Suggest an edit” on Maps or Google’s Business Profile complaint form.

05Do geotagged photos help?

No. Google removes the location data when photos are uploaded. Photos help because customers see real work, not because of the tags.

06How long until I appear in a nearby town?

For a small town with few competitors, a few months of reviews and a good town page is often enough. For a busy category, the map may stay out of reach without a branch — the normal results are the realistic target.

07Should I make a page for every taman?

No. Make pages for the towns customers actually search, such as Alor Gajah or Jasin, and mention the taman you cover inside each page.

08What does CST charge?

Local SEO is RM 800 a month and includes the Business Profile, service area set-up and three town or service pages. Full SEO is RM 1,500 a month.
